For Pakistanis abroad, documentation is rarely an end in itself. It becomes urgent because something else depends on it: a property cannot be transferred, an inheritance cannot be claimed, or a family member cannot be registered, because a record is wrong or a card cannot be obtained.
Much of this work is practical rather than contentious. Where a decision genuinely must be challenged, the route is a constitutional petition.
What we advise on
- Pakistani citizenship, dual nationality and renunciation
- CNIC, NICOP and Pakistan Origin Card applications
- Corrections to names, dates of birth, parentage and family records
- Registration of children born abroad
- Death registration and certificates required for succession
- Exit control list and travel restriction matters
- Challenges to NADRA and immigration decisions
Why a wrong record blocks everything
Pakistani institutions cross-check identity records, and an inconsistency that seemed harmless for years becomes decisive at the moment it matters. A name spelled differently across a passport, a CNIC and a title deed; a date of birth that does not match; a father's name recorded differently in a family record than on a succession petition — each of these will stop a transaction or a court process.
These corrections are usually achievable, but they take time and must be pursued through the correct authority with the right supporting evidence. Discovering the problem at the point of a property sale or a court filing is what makes it expensive.
Dual nationality
Pakistan permits dual nationality with a number of designated countries. Whether it is available to you depends on the specific country, and the position is not uniform across the diaspora.
The practical questions clients usually have are about consequences rather than eligibility — what dual nationality means for holding property, for inheritance, and for standing in Pakistani proceedings. We advise on those directly.
When a decision must be challenged
Where an application is refused, a record is blocked, or a card is cancelled without lawful basis, the remedy is a constitutional petition to the High Court under Article 199. This is a genuine and effective route against unlawful administrative action, but it is not a shortcut around requirements that have simply not been met.
We will tell you which of the two situations you are in. Where the application is deficient, correcting it is faster and cheaper than litigating it.
Common Questions
Frequently asked
My CNIC has been blocked. What can I do?
Establish the stated reason first, since the route differs entirely depending on whether it is a verification issue, a family-record inconsistency, or a decision taken on other grounds. Many blocks are resolved through the authority itself. Where a block is unlawful or unexplained, it can be challenged by constitutional petition.
Do I need a CNIC or NICOP to inherit property in Pakistan?
In practice you will need identity documentation to be recognised as an heir, to be named in succession proceedings and to have property transferred. Overseas heirs without current documentation should start that process early, because it often takes longer than the succession matter itself.
Can my children born abroad be registered as Pakistani nationals?
Generally yes, through registration with the Pakistani mission in your country of residence, supported by the required documentation. Difficulties usually arise from inconsistencies between the parents' records rather than from the application itself.
Does holding another nationality affect my rights in Pakistan?
Dual nationality is permitted with a number of designated countries and does not, of itself, remove your rights to hold or inherit property. Some offices and positions carry restrictions. If a specific right or transaction depends on it, take advice on your particular circumstances.
