What is a succession certificate and when is it needed?
It is an order of the court authorising the lawful heirs to collect the movable assets of a deceased person — bank balances, securities and similar. Banks and companies in Pakistan will generally not release funds without one.
Can heirs living abroad take part in succession proceedings?
Yes. Heirs outside Pakistan typically participate through an attested power of attorney and, where required, affidavits sworn before the Pakistani mission in their country of residence. Personal attendance is usually not necessary.
How long does an uncontested succession matter take?
Where the heirs are agreed and the documentation is complete, a straightforward succession certificate commonly takes some months. Contested matters, or those with incomplete records, take considerably longer.
