Spouse visa applications from Pakistan are refused on two things far more often than on the relationship: the financial requirement, and documents that do not match.
Both are within your control, and both are decided before you apply rather than during the assessment.
The financial requirement in outline
The sponsor must meet a minimum income requirement, evidenced in a prescribed way. The threshold has been increased in recent years and the position for different application categories has changed with it.
Check the current threshold and the rules applying on your intended date of application — do not rely on a figure quoted in an article, including this one. This is the single most common source of out-of-date advice in the market.
What is stable is the structure of the requirement, and that is what this page explains.
Which sources count
The rules recognise defined categories, and they are not interchangeable. Broadly:
- Salaried employment of the sponsor
- Non-salaried employment
- Self-employment or income from a company
- Cash savings, held for a specified period
- Pension income
- Other specified income
Two points that catch applicants out.
Categories cannot always be combined. Some combinations are permitted, others are not, and assuming you can add savings to income to reach the threshold is a frequent error.
The applicant's overseas income generally does not count towards the requirement where the applicant is applying from outside the UK. It is the sponsor's position that matters.
Specified evidence: format defeats more applications than amount
This is where well-qualified applicants fail.
The rules do not merely require you to have the money. They specify what documents must be produced, covering what period, in what form. A sponsor comfortably over the threshold whose payslips do not match the bank statements, or who is missing one month, can be refused.
For salaried sponsors, expect to need payslips and corresponding bank statements covering the specified period, an employer letter confirming the required details, and consistency between all three.
For self-employed sponsors the burden is heavier — company accounts, tax documentation, business bank statements, and evidence of the company's standing. Self-employment cases require considerably more preparation and should not be left late.
For cash savings, the money must be held for the specified period and be under the required control. Funds moved in shortly before applying defeat the requirement, and unexplained large deposits raise a separate credibility problem.
Accommodation and English
Beyond finances:
Adequate accommodation without recourse to public funds, evidenced — frequently a property inspection report and evidence of the sponsor's right to occupy.
English language at the required level, from an approved provider. Book this early; test availability is a common cause of delay.
The relationship evidence
Assessed on whether it is genuine and subsisting. Range and consistency matter more than volume:
- The nikah nama, registered, and the marriage certificate
- Evidence of communication over time, not just the recent period
- Evidence of visits, with travel documents
- Photographs across the relationship, not only the wedding
- Evidence of financial interdependence where it exists
- Statements from both parties
The Pakistani side is where we add most
Much of the evidence originates here, and it is where applications quietly fail.
Name consistency. The single most common defect. A name spelled one way on the passport, another on the CNIC, a third on the nikah nama. Fix it before applying, not after a caseworker finds it. See what to do when your CNIC is blocked.
Marriage registration. An unregistered nikah is very difficult to evidence. See the nikah nama: the clauses that matter.
Previous divorces. Where either party was previously married, the dissolution must be properly evidenced — the Union Council effectiveness certificate, attested. See the NADRA divorce certificate.
Attestation. Pakistani documents used abroad generally require the attestation chain. Start it early; it is frequently on the critical path.
If you are refused
Read the refusal notice and identify the precise ground. Whether an appeal, an administrative review or a fresh application is right depends on it, and the deadlines are short.
Do not reapply with the same evidence. And never conceal a previous refusal — concealment converts a recoverable evidential problem into a deception finding with a multi-year ban. See why UK visa applications from Pakistan get refused and visa refusals and appeals.
What we can and cannot do
Consultancy and advice only. No outcome is guaranteed — the decision rests with the Home Office, and nobody can promise a visa.
Immigration advice is also a regulated activity in the UK. Our work is carried out from Pakistan: assessing the position against the published rules, preparing and verifying documentation, handling attestation, correcting Pakistani records, and drafting the supporting submission. Where a matter requires regulated representation in the UK — an appeal, for instance — we coordinate with advisers regulated there and say so at the outset.
How the firm can help
We assess whether the financial requirement is met and in which category, identify what the specified evidence rules require in your case, prepare and verify the Pakistani-side documentation, and correct the record inconsistencies that cause most refusals.
Where an application has already been refused, we review the notice before anything further is filed.
See UK visa applications, or contact the firm with your sponsor's income position and the refusal notice if there is one.
